Read Across America-
Various participating classrooms "across America"
http://www.twice.cc/read |
 |
TWICE (The Michigan Two
Way Interactive Network) annually organizes a special celebration
of the national NEA
event Read
Across America by providing the opportunity for schools
in the continental United States to connect using two-way interactive
video to both read to and be read to by another class.
The purpose of this celebration is to have students reading
to students. What they read is your choice i.e., a Dr. Seuss
book (this event is in honor of his birthday), a book about
your community, a poem or an original story your class wrote.
Just pick something you and your students love!
This project involves matching classrooms with other schools
in the nation. We hope to match schools with schools outside
their state, which may mean long distance fees for ISDN connections.
Connectivity fees are the only cost to this project and individual
schools are responsible for the long distance charges. |

Smithsonian Environmental Research Center
- Washington, DC http://www.serc.si.edu/education/dl/index.aspx
(SERC) |
 |
SERC's distance learning programs, all supported by teacher-developed
curriculum, bring Smithsonian science into classrooms and homes
across the country. By participating in videoconferences or
Electronic Field Trips, you have the opportunity to talk with
expert scientists and educators at the Smithsonian Environmental
Research Center and possibly venture into places where on-site
visitors seldom are permitted to go.
Go behind the scenes of science with SERC's interactive videoconferences
on topics related to SERC research. Each informative videoconference
lasts between thirty and sixty minutes, during which time students
will participate in hands-on science demonstrations and interact
with SERC staff.
Each videoconference comes with curriculum aligned with Maryland
Science Content Standards to use in the classroom before, during,
and after the videoconference. SERC is currently offering videoconferences
on a wide variety of topics.
SERC Electronic Field Trips
(EFTs) are content-driven programs
designed to offer students in K-12 classrooms learning opportunities
they would not otherwise experience.
During these live, interactive, satellite broadcasts, students
interact with scientists through live demonstrations, phone
calls, and e-mail. This interactivity, along with teacher-developed
curriculum, makes EFTs a highly effective educational tool.
Learn more about EFTs with International
Distance Learning: Technology and Content, Or How To Manage
Teachers, Trees, Turtles, and Television (pdf), an article
by Dottie Klugel published in the Proceedings of the Third Annual
Hawaii International Conference on Education (2005).
SERC produces EFTs through a partnership with Ball State University
(BSU). Follow the links below to learn about our past and upcoming
